Oscars 2021: Full List of Winners

The 93rd Academy Awards honoured movies released in a year of a global pandemic, with a socially distanced ceremony held at Union Station in Los Angeles. From Chloé Zhao’s picturesque journey through the American west in Nomadland to Emerald Fennell’s controversial rape-revenge thriller Promising Young Woman, here are this year’s Oscar winners:

Nomadland

Three wins: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress

This picturesque examination of nomadic life in the American West is currently the favourite, following a successful global premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Director Chloé Zhao (The Rider) adapts the non-fiction book by Jessica Bruder, and uses fictional traveller Fern to move through that remote world.

Frances McDormand has won the Oscar for best actress, and Nomadland triumphed in three of the top categories, including best picture and best director. Zhao became the second-ever woman to win the Best Director Oscar (and the first-ever woman of colour to win, too). Joshua James Richards was robbed of the Best Cinematography Oscar, with his vast, beautiful and rural visuals.

Mank

Two wins: Best Cinematography, Best Production Design


David Fincher’s Mank has won two Oscars at the 93rd Academy Awards — for Production Design and Cinematography, celebrating the film’s black-and-white photography and the recreation of 1930s and 40s Hollywood and iconic locations like Hearst Castle, aka San Simeon.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Daniel Kaluuya has won the best-supporting actor Oscar for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah.

Directed by Shaka King, Judas and the Black Messiah portrays the betrayal of Black Panthers chair Fred Hampton by FBI informant William O’Neal (played by getting Out co-star Lakeith Stanfield, who was also nominated for this award) in late-1960s Chicago.

According to Variety, the film was incredibly difficult to make. Many studios, including the risk-takers at Netflix and A24, passed up the opportunity because of the budget and subject matter.

The Father

Two wins: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor

Three decades after Anthony Hopkins’ chilling portrayal of serial killer Hannibal Lecter earned a lead-actor Oscar, the role of a man fighting dementia brought him his second trophy.

Despite his pedigree, Hopkins was a surprise winner in the top acting category.

The late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman was widely expected to win the honour, which in a very rare move by the film academy was the last to be handed out this year instead of the usual ceremony-capping best picture. 

Hopkins’ win was also anticlimactic on a show where he wasn’t present to accept the trophy. Presenter Joaquin Phoenix’s reading of his name was the last dramatic moment of a most unusual ceremony.

Sound of Metal

Two wins: Best Editing, Best Sound

Darius Marder’s debut feature film explores the experience Ruben (Riz Ahmed), a punk-metal drummer and former drug user, who loses his hearing almost overnight and is forced to come to terms with his new life.

Riz Ahmed made history as the first Muslim to be nominated for Best Actor but was unsuccessful. The film won for Best Sound and Best Editing.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Two wins: Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling


Makeup artist Sergio Lopez-Rivera, hair department head Mia Neal, and Viola Davis’ hairstylist, Jamika Wilson, took home the statue for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, with the latter pairing becoming the first-ever Black stylists to win in the category.

Minari

Winner-Best Supporting Actress

Yuh-Jung Youn won the Oscar for best-supporting actress for her performance in “Minari” and made history by becoming the first Korean actor to win an Academy Award.

Although much of the film is spoken in Korean “Minari” is about a family from South Korea who moved to Arkansas to start a new life. It ends up being more challenging than expected, so their grandmother, played by Youn, comes to live with them. It’s also produced by the American company Plan B Entertainment, which was co-founded by Brad Pitt.

The film, as well as Youn, have received critical acclaim throughout awards season, with Youn winning a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA before her Oscar win.

Promising Young Woman

Winner-Best Original Screenplay


Emerald Fennell won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Promising Young Woman is Fennell’s feature debut and stars Carey Mulligan as a woman attempting to take revenge for the rape of her best friend in college. Fennell was previously best known as an actor, playing Camilla Parker Bowles in the Netflix series The Crown, and working as head writer on the second series of Killing Eve.

Fennell was considered a strong favourite for the award, having already won the Bafta and Writers Guild award for best original screenplay. However, she had to overcome a line-up including Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and Lee Isaac Chung (Minari).

The 93rd Oscars have also paid tribute to filmmakers and actors who have died over the past 14 months, since the last Academy Awards.

It was a year of profound loss in so many ways. At the Academy, we remember these accomplished filmmakers and artists,” said the Academy as it remembered the artists we have lost the world over in the past year. Indian artists Irrfan Khan, and Bhanu Athaiya were remembered, alongside Chadwick Boseman and other Hollywood stalwart.
